Some Interesting Information on Royston
Royston is a town and civil parish in the district of North Hertfordshire, England. It is located some 43 miles (69 km) north of central London in a highly rural area of the county. The town is conveniently located for fast links to London and the north, as it is only a short distance from both the A1(M) and M11 motorways.
Today, Royston is a small market town with light industry providing employment. The town grew up at the crossing of two ancient thoroughfares, Ermine Street and the Icknield Way and has grown around these two roads over the many years. Royston is named after the Wayside Cross erected by Lady Roysia. Until 1540 the "vill" of Royston was divided between five parishes: Barkway, Reed and Therfield in Hertfordshire and Melbourn and Kneesworth in Cambridgeshire. In that year it became a separate ecclesiastical parish, partly in each county, and has grown to be the largest of all parishes with a population of around 14,570.
Since 1974 Royston has formed part of the non-metropolitan district of North Hertfordshire. The council is based at Letchworth. Today Royston enjoys a diverse economy, with a large number of businesses located both in the town and surrounding villages
There are a number of attractions and landmarks in Royston. Royston Museum presents the history of the town in the form of an ancient tapestry. Also worth visiting is the Royston Cave which is thought to have been used by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. Being unique in Europe, if not the world, the cave remains a mysterious and magical place, attracting visitors from all around the world. You can also visit the stately home, Wimpole Hall, which is about 6 miles from Royston. There is also a war memorial devoted to the memory of the servicemen of the town who were killed in the First World The War Memorial in Melbourn Street was erected in 1922. Royston is also very proud to have its own Town Crier and its own 18 hole golf course located on the ‘Heath’.
Royston is very much still a market town, with a market on Wednesdays and Saturday in the town centre.
